After a long night I have almost completed making the second last movement change, allowing both players to be active at once. It took a lot longer than I expected , it turns out there was a lot of issues that I avoided with my previous setup and I had to add a lot of if statements. I am going to have to do another big code clean after this as it is getting quite difficult to read, although I shouldn't be altering anything again now my mechanics are locked down.
I've also begun the search for an artist as the scope and code is mostly locked down, the rest of the project will mostly be level creation, integrating art assets, creating additional sound/music, and polish, polish, polish.
